What Is Airsoft?
Airsoft is a military simulation or 'milsim' game. It is similar to paintball at first glance but the similarity ends there. It is played with a much greater emphasis on tactics, camouflage, teamwork and realism.
The guns used fire 6 or 8mm plastic bb's at various power levels from 280-328 fps for short to mid range smg's and carbines up to 500 fps for a top end sniper rifle. These are a guideline for UK games but overseas players have been known to regularly exceed these limits, particularly in Hong Kong where the game has it's origins.
The game is usually played on either a woodland or urban site and the tactics and equipment used vary greatly depending on location. In woodland games contact with the opposing team tends to be long range at first. This leads to the use of camouflage and predominantly long barrelled, high power guns often with telescopic sights. Urban games tend to place much less emphasis on camouflage and accuracy but more on overwhelming firepower, speed and manoeuvrability, therefore using much shorter higher rof guns and usually heavy use of pyrotechnics such as flashbang and smoke grenades.
